One gun control measure among the many flying through the California legislature won bipartisan support – a bill that would create a 15-day “gun amnesty” period, allowing Californians who possess firearms illegally to turn them in without repercussions.
After that amnesty period, the California Department of Justice would crack down on the thousands of Californians who own an estimated 40,000 guns illegally, sending agents to their homes to confiscate the weapons and potentially issue fines.
The bill, SB 38, passed 39-0, and now heads to the Assembly for approval.
The amnesty would be associated with a recent measure, signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown, that allocated $24 million to the Justice Department’s Armed Prohibited Persons System, which works to identify gun owners who under existing law are not allowed to possess firearms.
